Careers Education at Woodbury School

Our Careers Programme

Information for Students

At Woodbury School, we are dedicated to guiding our students towards exciting futures, beginning with Skills Builder in the Primary classes. This develops your skills as you continue your journey through the school. In Year 9 we will work with you to create a 14+ Pathway with the aid of our Independent Careers Advisor. This programme is designed to help you make important choices about your education and career.

The school and Independent Careers Advisor will work closely with you to uncover your strengths and interests, helping you explore different career options that could suit you. You will also learn how to write an engaging CV, a vital skill that will help you present yourself well to future employers as well as completing online application forms.

We understand the importance of connecting what you learn in school to the real world. That’s why we’ll support you in finding courses and job opportunities in the Local Labour Market, as well as having guest speakers, taster days and trips out to ensure that you are well-prepared for what lies ahead. You will have the chance to gain work experience, giving you a taste of various professions.

Lastly, we strive to link your subjects with potential careers, so you can see how your learning can lead to fulfilling opportunities. We’re here to inspire you as you carve out your path to success.

Information for Parents & Carers:

At Woodbury School, we are committed to providing our students with a comprehensive careers education that prepares them for the world beyond the classroom. Our 14+ Pathway offers tailored guidance for students transitioning to further education and employment, ensuring they make informed decisions about their future. This includes assistance with CV writing, application forms and life skills - these are crucial skills in presenting an individual to potential employers and institutions.

We engage an Independent Careers Advisor who works closely with our students on a 1:1 basis, to offer personalised advice, helping them understand their options and navigate potential career pathways. This feeds into their subject options in Year 10 and beyond.

In addition to individual support, we emphasise the importance of sourcing courses and jobs within the Local Labour Market, connecting students with local opportunities that align with their interests and aspirations.

Our careers programme is embedded throughout all of the subjects taught at Woodbury School, demonstrating the relevance of academic achievements in various professions. Through using Morrisby, Skills Builder, talks, workshops, and placements, students gain insights into careers associated with their studies, enabling them to see the direct application of their learning in real-world scenarios.

Together, these initiatives empower our students to embark on successful and fulfilling career journeys.

Information for Employers:

At Woodbury School, we recognise the importance of equipping our students with the skills and guidance necessary for successful career pathways. Our comprehensive careers programme encompasses a range of strategies aimed at supporting students from the moment they start at Woodbury School.

We provide access to an Independent Careers Advisor, who offers tailored advice to students, ensuring they are informed about their options post-16. Essential skills are developed through practical workshops on CV writing, equipping students with the tools required to present themselves effectively in the job market.

Students benefit from organised trips and visits to various workplaces, alongside guest speakers who share their industry experiences, providing invaluable insights into real-world careers. Our work experience programme further enhances this by allowing students to gain hands-on experience in their areas of interest.

We actively source courses and job opportunities aligned with the local labour market, facilitating connections between students and potential career paths. Furthermore, we integrate our curriculum with careers education, linking subject-specific knowledge to future employment opportunities.

Central to our approach is the Skills Builder framework and Morrisby programme, which emphasises the development of eight key employability skills: speaking, listening, problem-solving, staying positive, creativity, aiming high, leadership, and teamwork, fostering well-rounded and employable individuals.

Labour Market Information:

Labour Market Information (LMI) is pivotal in guiding individuals, particularly students, towards informed career choices. An Independent Careers Advisor plays a crucial role in interpreting LMI, offering tailored advice that addresses the specific needs of each student. Local colleges provide vocational courses that align with regional employment demands, ensuring individuals acquire relevant qualifications.

In addition to traditional routes, alternative providers offer diverse educational pathways that cater to a variety of learning preferences and career ambitions. Apprenticeships are available as an option, blending practical experience with academic learning, thereby enhancing employability. Local employers actively seek skilled workers, presenting opportunities for students to engage in work placements and internships that provide invaluable real-world experience.

National employers are also an employment option for our pupils. A comprehensive understanding of both local and national labour markets equips students with the insights necessary to navigate their futures wisely and effectively.
