Our Careers Programme

At Aspire, careers education is a meaningful part of our curriculum from the earliest years. We focus on developing pupils’ understanding of the world of work and helping them build the foundational skills they'll need in the future.

This includes:

• Learning about a wide range of jobs and career paths across the UK and globally.

• Developing transferable skills through the Skills Builder framework in our twice-weekly assemblies and classroom follow-up tasks.

• Participation in Forest School, which builds independence, resilience, and teamwork.

• Regular off-site visits that include trips to places like the fire station, shops, local council buildings, and more to experience different roles first-hand.

• Chance to bring their skill development to life through dynamic challenge days and projects linked to essential skill development.

• Workshops and visits from a range of professionals such as chefs, the police, animal handlers.

• Themed days and weeks, such as British Science Week and National Careers Week, where pupils explore careers linked to subjects and their personal interests.

Pupils are assessed using the Skills Builder framework, and we track their progress over time. These assessments are shared with their next setting upon transition.

At Aspire, we want you to dream big about your future!

You’ll get the chance to explore all kinds of jobs and discover what people really do at work. You might visit exciting places, meet interesting people, and even try out different roles yourself - like being part of Pupil Parliament, helping out at lunchtime, or lending a hand in a PE lesson.

We’ll make learning about jobs fun! Through special lessons, themed days, and whole-school events, you’ll hear real stories, ask questions, and imagine what you might like to do one day.

Who knows? You might even discover a job you’ve never heard of before - and realise it could be perfect for you!

Information for Parents & Carers:

At Aspire, we know that children start forming ideas about the world of work from a very young age. That’s why it’s so important to give them positive, broad, and inspiring experiences early on.

By introducing career learning in primary school, we help pupils see a world full of possibilities - long before they have to make any big decisions.

Our pupils explore different types of jobs through real-life experiences, such as visiting workplaces, meeting people in a variety of roles, and taking part in themed days and weeks. In the classroom, they discuss what different jobs involve, how people use their skills, and how these connect to what they are learning now.
We also give children the chance to take on responsibilities in school — from Pupil Parliament to lunchtime helpers — building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in any future role.

All of this is guided by the CDI Careers Development Framework, a respected national framework that ensures our programme is age-appropriate, purposeful, and progressive. By combining this with the Skills Builder Framework, we are laying the foundations for every child to grow in confidence, curiosity, and ambition for the future.

Meeting professionals from different walks of life helps our pupils see the wide range of possibilities that exist beyond school - and it’s never too early to start building that awareness.

We value partnerships that give our children real-life insights into job roles - whether that’s through visits to local workplaces, hands-on workshops, or welcoming visitors into school to share their career stories. These encounters are carefully tailored to be age-appropriate for primary pupils, ensuring they spark curiosity, ambition, and an understanding of the wider world.

Work Experience

While traditional work experience is not appropriate for a primary setting, our pupils still take part in rich, purposeful activities that help them understand what it’s like to have a job. Within school, children take on responsibilities such as helping with snack or lunchtime, supporting in PE or Forest School lessons, reading to younger pupils, and representing their peers in Pupil Parliament.

Beyond the school gates, we visit a variety of workplaces - from the fire station to supermarkets and local businesses - where pupils can see real jobs in action, ask questions, and make connections between what they learn in class and the wider world.

These experiences are age-appropriate yet highly meaningful, planting the seeds of ambition and helping children see themselves as active participants in their community’s future.

Labour Market Information

At Aspire, we introduce labour market information in ways that are engaging and age-appropriate for primary pupils.
This means exploring:
• Different types of jobs and what they involve
• Where those jobs can be found - both in our local area and beyond
• Challenging gender stereotypes in the workplace
• Encouraging every child to think widely and creatively about their future

Through lessons, themed days, visits, and guest talks, our curriculum exposes children to a variety of employment sectors and opportunities. By starting early, we help pupils build aspirations, understand the diversity of the world of work, and see that their future can take many exciting paths.

Impact and Review Information

As a primary setting, we measure the success of our careers provision by looking at how engaged our pupils are, listening to feedback from both children and families, and drawing on staff observations.

We also utilise the CEC’s primary self-assessment tools in order to measure where we are with national benchmarks. We also carry out regular surveys with pupils and parents to help us reflect on what’s working well and identify areas for improvement.

This ongoing cycle of review ensures our careers programme remains relevant, inspiring, and age-appropriate.
