Careers Education at Grove Road School

Our Careers Programme

At Grove Road School, our Careers Programme is thoughtfully designed to align with our holistic approach to education. It ensures that all pupils benefit from a broad range of experiences that extend well beyond the classroom, enabling them to become fully equipped with the knowledge, skills, and guidance necessary to pursue successful and fulfilling career paths in the future.

We incorporate a variety of tools and platforms into our programme, including the Skills Builder Framework and Morrisby, to enhance and refine key employability skills. These are introduced and developed throughout each pupil’s time at Grove Road School.

In addition, we provide access to a dedicated, independent careers adviser who offers personalised and tailored support to every student. This ensures that all individuals are given the guidance they need to explore opportunities, make informed decisions, and work purposefully towards achieving their long-term aspirations.

Work Experience

Work experience represents a highly valuable opportunity for students to gain first-hand insight into the world of work, particularly within a career or vocational area in which they have a personal interest. It enables young people to develop essential skills, build confidence, and acquire industry-specific knowledge that can be applied when they transition from the school environment into further education, training, or employment.

At Grove Road School, our dedicated Careers Leader works closely with both students and external organisations to secure meaningful work experience placements. These placements are carefully matched to the individual interests, strengths, and aspirations of each student, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to their personal career development.

For example, one of our students is currently undertaking a placement within the bricklaying industry. Through this experience, they are gaining practical knowledge and skills related to the various processes involved in bricklaying, as well as valuable, hands-on experience of working on a real site and contributing to an ongoing project.

Benefits of Work Experience:

For Students:

· Increased confidence and self-esteem.

· Enhanced understanding of different careers and industries.

· Development of key employability skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

· Opportunity to gain valuable work experience.

For Employers:

· Opportunity to build relationships with schools and educational institutions.

· Exposure to new talent and ideas.

· Potential future employees.

For the School:

· Enhanced reputation and community engagement.

· Improved student outcomes and career prospects.

Labour Market Information

Sutton is a great place to live and work. Lots of people here have jobs in areas like healthcare, education, shops, and office work. There are also many small businesses, which means there are a variety of different jobs available some close to home, and some further away in London.

Many adults in Sutton have studied at college or university, but there are also lots of ways to learn skills through training, apprenticeships, and supported work placements. This means there are different paths to work, so you can choose what’s right for you.

People in Sutton are paid well compared to other areas, and most adults have jobs. That’s good news for our students - it means that with the right support and choices, there are real opportunities to find work, earn money, and be part of the community.

At school, we’ll help you explore careers, learn about your strengths, and find next steps that suit your goals whether that’s more education, training, or starting your first job.

Impact and Review Information

We measure the success of our careers programme through a combination of destination outcomes, such as post-16 and post-18 education, training, or employment data, as well as student, parent/carers and staff feedback collected via surveys and events.

We also track student engagement with careers activities and employer encounters throughout the year to assess reach and impact.

Our published careers information is reviewed annually, to ensure all content is current and aligned with updated guidance and local labour market trends.
