THE EDUCATION SERVICE
Horizon Care provides its own education service (Horizon Care School Registration Number 860/6032) to ensure that all young people placed with the agency, regardless of their previous educational experiences, not only attend school, but also realise the highest possible levels of educational attainment.

KEY PRINCIPLES
We believe the educational needs of looked-after children and children in need should be met within mainstream educational services and, except on rare occasions, the complex personal difficulties faced by children should not be used to justify or explain low levels of educational attainment. Children and young people facing extreme levels of difficulty can and should be successfully educated within mainstream provisions in ways which not only meet their individual requirements but also reflect the specific context in which schools and other appropriate education services operate.
Horizon Care schools offer the following:
Thorough AfL (Assessment for Learning) and educational reports at all stages of the placement. |
Planned education programmes to meet the individuals needs in accordance with care plans and SEN. |
Co-ordination with the host LEA to provide mainstream provision where appropriate and transition planning |
Arrange interim support to ensure attendance by the young person at mainstream or other appropriate school or education institute. |
Provision of a comprehensive package to meet the individuals age, level and ability including appropriate work experience, Connexions advise and nationally recognised awards through AQA Unit Awards, GCSE, Entry Level, ASDAN and ALAN (Adult Literacy and Numeracy). |
Ongoing assessment throughout the placement. |
Support for students in the event of exclusion or other factors which affect school attendance e.g. illness. This will include advocacy for the student and the provision of appropriate activities that support both the student, residential home and the care placement overall. |
Good communication with placing authorities and those with parental responsibility to ensure that the aims and objectives of care plans are met and detailed reports when students leave to inform future placements of a student’s levels, progress and achievements. |
